As I was watching a preview for Les Miserables where Anne Hathaway is being shaved bald something dawned on me yesterday. The stigma attached to being bald is rapidly disappearing. That’s not to say that there aren’t still people who are uncomfortable with hair loss…but overall, these days it’s becoming more and more acceptable.
I remember going to church and seeing little old men in bad toupees where you could see the line at the back of the head where the rug began. Never did it look natural, yet people would wear them rather than acknowledge that they were folically challenged. This was also the way it was walking around the street, out to dinner or at a mall. You knew there was a cause for concern when small children would just stop and stare…sometimes even point!
The only thing that was worse than baldness were comb overs. I don’t care how pretty your face is…a comb over is unattractive on everyone. No one is capable of making it look good…it doesn’t matter how strong the lenses are on your rose colored glasses.
In fact, growing up the stigma around baldness was so strong that shaving her head was considered a contributor to the beginning of the end of Sinead O’Connor’s career. Granted, it wasn’t the ONLY thing…her mouth usually got her into pretty big trouble, too. (Personally I think she was just a tad before her time….she is tame compared to Gaga) Then there was Pro-Wrestling…Baldness was considered so horrible that they created Hair v. Hair matches. The character of Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake built his name on tormenting people with his shears, putting them in a sleeper hold and cutting their hair. In fact, most of the time you would only see people walking around bald in public was if you were going through chemo. Nearly everyone else hid it!
So when did being bald suddenly gain some cool factor? Oddly enough, I think it started when the song Skin by Rascall Flatts became a runaway hit on the country music charts…
There was a poignant moment in the end that touched hearts with the show of solidarity in the gesture her boyfriend made for her. It was touchingly sweet and romantic. It was undeniably warm and generous.
And then when you started to look around, action stars like Vin Diesel and Jason Statham and The Rock started gaining in popularity. Bruce Willis went bald completely. And women like me found themselves drooling over guys like Shemar Moore! I mean, look at him! What is not to love???
And as if that wasn’t enough to convince you that bald is becoming the new cool, then people like Kelly Pickler showing her childhood friend support and shaving her head in solidarity as her friend faces off against breast cancer. Or the two Colt cheerleaders who shaved their heads in support of coach Pagano after they raised over $10,000 toward cancer research.
All of this is awesome! So much better than toupees and comb overs! So if you’re a man and your hair is starting to thin or recede…please take note! If Michael Jordan could do it, why not you? Haven’t you noticed? Bald is the new Beautiful!
What do you guys think? Any other trends that used to have stigmas that are now considered cool?
I’ll be honest, I’m still waiting for real sized women to be considered sexy and cool. As someone who’s been both on the skinny side and the more reubenesque side of the spectrum I’ve been lucky. I have never questioned or struggled with my appeal regardless of what size I am. Unfortunately, I know I’m not the norm… Maybe one day…
I have always found if the woman, knows how to do it right, plus sized women can be very sexy. And as for the comb overs never liked them and when I get to that point where I have to do that I’m shaving it bald myself.

I agree…I think confidence can be the sexiest thing about a woman. As for the comb over…I’m glad. I think you’re right. There has never been a time where comb overs were sexy. 🙂

Ahh Kit we so think alike. Yes bald is the new sexy… I would NEVER have thought to go out with a bald man. When I looked at Mr. S’s photo on the Internet Date site – I screamed NO He’s a bald man (well not completely but the top half is)He sort of has the Monk hairstyle going 😉
Anywhoo Comb overs blah on any man. Mr. S’s theory is “If the tide is going our why fight it” and I love rubbing his noggin 🙂 Enjoyed this post – thank you! 🙂

You are most welcome. Hubby started getting a soft spot early. I’ve noticed that every hair cut gets closer and closer to the skull. He’s dead sexy to me regardless, but I think it’s just a matter of time before he joins the ranks.

Just think how manageable it would be – wish we could get away with it! It’s only a matter of time for a lot of guys. My ex has a full head of thick hair still..and my girls whinge because they have taken after him…

Oh, I know! Though I can’t let him hear me say that too loud or he may take it as permission to shave my head bald. He has found my hair everywhere…sometimes even in his boxer briefs…without me being attached to it at the time…LOL!

Backing away from that one while I’m still laughing 🙂

Thanks! Now we just have to make the whole not being a tooth pick thing cool so women stop killing themselves…sometimes literally (Karen Carpenter).

Bald is sexy….. Many a time I have threatened to shave my head because I get so tired of dealing with my hair! I am afraid to see what my scalp is like as it is rather odd shaped LOL
Would definitely make my gettting ready to go somewhere easier and less time LOL

LOL! I have a lot of hair…and shed a lot. My hair has been found in the strangest places. Hubby has threatened to shave me in my sleep. 😉

What about Telly Savalas in Kojack and Yul Brynner in The King and I? That’s where it really began. I’ve never even seen the Rascal. Flatts video and I bet I’m not alone.

Telly never did anything for me…never thought he was cool…just another cop…and. ::gasp::..he was BALD. I thought his lollipops were more interesting.
As for Yul Brynner…definitely a sexy bald man & an interesting actor, but still not even close to being the norm. Even Patrick Stewart was a few years before his time in the sexy bald men category.
There WERE sexy bald men to come before…though not nearly as many. Now, bald doesn’t hold the same stigma. Where before we’d qualify a statement..,”you know who’s a sexy bald man?” Now it’s just…”you know who’s sexy?”

Ditto! I’d have a lot more respect for the fashion world and media if people of ALL sizes and shapes, and all their beauty, were celebrated.

Absolutely! I want to be a contributor to the growth of people’s self esteem…not someone who tears it down. Very few women suffer from an excess in that category. 😦

Sarabeth always, always leaves me with a knot in my throat. And those combovers are fricking ridculous….I prefer being bald though…always been jealous of those guys who never had to have a hair cut 🙂

You’ve got an excess of hair? LOL! (And unfortunately there is only one thing I can think of that is equally as bad as a comb over…and that’s rocking the Ben Franklin ‘do in a ponytail.)

Bald IS beautiful….especially if you look like Shemar Moore (drool). I agree with you – what’s wrong with taking it all off in lieu of wearing a hideous comb over?!

Exactly. And yeah…Shemar can make a girl’s heart go pitter pat with just a glance from those bedroom eyes.

My husband has always shaved his head. I remember 1 time he grew it out and I hated it! I think another thing is tattoos. People used to be judged when they had a tattoo, but now its the norm.
