Own Your Power

Today, as I contemplate that it is International Women’s Day, I’ve been thinking about what makes us so special as women. There are so many things that make me absolutely proud to be a woman. At it’s core, though, I think it boils down to one thing. Resilience. We are very good at recovering. Sometimes it’s a physical thing like child birth while other time’s it’s heart break or loss. Regardless, as a whole, we find ways to regroup, recover and come back stronger. I felt the above music illustrated that super power quite well.

I attempted to put my feelings about women in general into a poem, and this is what I came up with.

Mystique

“The Weaker Sex”
is what we’re called.
Generations
of velvet encased
iron core,
who have held
and nurtured
in body and heart-
souls,
Sons who become
fathers,
daughters to
mothers.
We’ve stood firm,
guardians of the castle
charged with
sacred duty
to mold, guide and nurture,
teach and love.
Dry tears,
kiss away wounds
spiritual and physical.
Healing powers-
steeped in
understanding,
forgiveness and patience.
We hold on if we can,
let go when we must.
kindness, empathy
and knowledge.
Strength is required
to be
“The softer side.”

To all the women out there, I hope you realize how truly strong you are and that you have someone who shares your life who recognizes those superpowers you carry so effortlessly. Today, on International Woman’s Day, I think it’s fair to ask. What do you think makes women unique and/or powerful? What things do you respect the most?

For all you girls…in whichever part of life you happen to fall in…this is for you. Hold your head up. Own your power! You ARE strong.

Excellent verse Kitt, so well written. As the years go on, I hope that women everywhere will be strong enough to stand up to abuse and cruelty and bullying and all the manner of things, that now some of them endure. Women are getting stronger. We are WOMEN hear us ROAR! xx

Wonderful post..and a great poem to boot! Where would the world be without women..oh yeah..non-existent! Being older, I have had the pleasure of watching women progress throughout the decades to a gender now recognized as strong, intelligent and innovative. I hope that my granddaughter’s generation will look back at history and be proud of the pioneers of women’s liberation!

Thank you for that. I had hoped I was doing women justice with my words. As for women’s lib, you’re right…the pioneers did wonderful things for equality. I think it’s a shame, though that there are women who now look at simple kindnesses and courtesies like opening doors or holding out chairs or helping with coats as an affront to their womanhood. Somehow they missed that those are simply outward symbols of respect and being cherished. Sometimes, embracing our power can be knowing when to shut up…LOL!

Our perception–and ability to communicate. Despite (maybe) walls encountered…we persist in trying for that connection. You know how it goes, right? God made Adam, slapped his forehead Homer Simpson Style (DOH!!!) and then made the improved version. Woman is the 2.0 model!!

LOL! Karen, I really LOVE your humor. I also agree with your assessment about connections. As a whole, we don’t want anyone to feel alone or not included. I think it’s part of that nurturing nature. 🙂

Was hanging out at Susie’s party and thought I would stop by. Dude first off let me say that I love that Martina McBride song. It’s awesome I wish she would have written it when I was younger, I could have used it back then 🙂 But I still LOVE it! And duuuuuuuuuuuuude can I say how awesome your poem is … “Strength is required to be ‘The softer side.'” That line is the best! BEST! Nice post.

Yeah, I completely hear ya about the Martina song. I could’ve used it when I was younger, too. It’s fantastic. As for the poem…thank you. I’m so glad you appreciated my poem. (Definitely gives me the warm and fuzzies.) I’m glad you enjoyed that line in particular. It’s my favorite, too. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

Love your poem and I agree! We are the best at recovering. We have been held back as a sex and our strength is in “our softer side!”
I am so glad that you came to the party. It is guests like you that make the whole thing work and make it worthwhile! **muah**

Sorry it took me all day to read this. On the bright side, having your post open for as long as I did had to help your ratings. 😉 My family can be so demanding sometimes, sheesh. Absolute, fabulous post, Kitt. I couldn’t agree with you more on the strength of a woman. I see it all the time in my own home. I actually think we are the stronger sex in many ways. Your poem is simple beautiful, too.
