The Super Heroes In The Mirror And In Your Bed

It’s funny…I’ve always loved this song, but for some reason as much as it made me think of love and romance (yes, this is my song for my Valentine’s Day countdown today), it also makes me think of super heroes.

I’ve got a little secret…I’m a bit of a tomboy. My hubby will tell you that I only pull my girl card out when it’s convenient for me. This means that as a girl, my favorite cartoons were Thundercats, He-Man, and GI Joe. When I got older I got hooked on X-Men & WildC.A.T.S. I’ve always loved stories with lots of action, preferably with enhanced powers…maybe even super powers.

When TV shows like Mutant X, Dark Angel, Birds Of Prey and Lois & Clark came on the screen, they had a guaranteed fan in me. As a little girl, I used to pretend to be Wonder Woman. Once these new shows came on I loved the powers of the women in the first 3 shows. In Mutant X, I loved Shalimar Fox. She was a mutant, enhanced with feline/cat-like instincts. Come to think of it, Max from Dark Angel and Helena Kyle had feral natures, too. Shoot, Helena was Catwoman & Batman’s daughter…it stood to reason. Yes, with all the super powers out there…I feel the need to be a bit on the animal magnetism side…grace and balance and power. I thought other powers were interesting, but if I could have picked…that would be my super power. What about you guys?

Of course no super heroine should be doomed to a life alone…so I fantasized about the type of Superhero a girl like me should have. I’ve had little mini-crushes on all sorts of superheroes over the years, but there are 3 that really speak to me.

Instead of showing off his strength and amazing abs…I’m going to showcase his other side…which I find equally sexy. Apparently, so did Lois! Who could blame her?

Of course I’m a woman, so the next one is not really a surprise. So far he’s been droolworthy in every movie I’ve seen him in…but still, it’s the first role that captured my imagination the best. He’s just dead sexy and a pretty badass superhero!

My all time favorite male superhero has been a favorite since his cartoon days. There was something intensely sexy about his southern charm & playful wit…and when they finally put him in one of the movies I cheered. It was about time! Of course he’s also one of the most loved comic book heroes… Do you know who it is yet?  It’s the Ragin’ Cajun, himself…Mr Remy LeBeau! Yeah, I’d love for him to shuffle my deck…and then some. ;-D

I keep hoping they’ll finally give his character his own movie… So far, no luck. I keep hoping! So now you know about me…what kind of super hero I’d love to be. What about you? And if you could be with any superhero, who are your dream guys/girls? More importantly, why? (By the way, my superhero men were listed in order…3-2-1)

Sexy Men Of HGTV

I watch HGTV a lot.  The channel is great for ambient noise when I’m writing… and a great distraction when I’m on the treadmill, running.

In the past, when I’d write I’d put music on. The problem was that I’d get distracted singing along or enjoying the way the different instruments bonded together to create an amazing blend of tones that sounded like magic to my ears. Nothing got written down. Then I turned to TV. I’d turn on a show I liked…but get so caught up in the show I’d forget that I was supposed to be writing.

Next I turned to complete silence. This works…most of the time, it’s actually my preference. I have learned, though, that there is such a thing as too much silence. As I discussed that issue with my writing mentor she recommended I find a channel that had something on that I wouldn’t be upset to miss, but that if I needed to step away from my work…I’d enjoy what I see.

Thus began my mad girl crush on a few guys on three awesome shows!  So…without any further ado, I introduce you to my top 3 HGTV crushes…

In 3rd places are twins from Property Brothers…I’m sure you can imagine all the fantasies that can work with twins. (And with one being a contractor…great hands!)

Then there’s Scott from Income Property… He has a sense of humor, he’s great with his hands…and his dimple keeps winking at me.

And then there’s my all time favorite, Jamie Durie from The Outdoor Room…he used to be a stripper, but now he creates the most amazing outdoor rooms. With his accent, his smile and his talent…how could I resist?

When you’re working on your art, what do you do to get focused? Do you require ambient noise? Do you have a favorite HGTV show?

(Guys, I know Sabrina Soto is hot…and my hubby thinks Mike Holmes from Holmes on Homes is pretty badass, so I know you can contribute to this convo.)

A Little Cheer Right Here

Still not over the tragedy from yesterday…but I don’t think we’re meant to get over events like that completely. I’m just glad to be home with my hubby and my dogs, able to hug and kiss them…and bake Christmas cookies.

Of course this means I need to smile because those cookies need to taste like joy, not tears…. So, for me, the first step is to bring on the music. Shocker, right? But not just any music…Christmas music!

So, here is one of my favorite Christmas songs, “Baby It’s Cold Outside”, done on one of my favorite TV shows, GLEE..by one of my favorite Pinoy Mestisos (kinda like me)…Darren Criss. I’m really hoping that his character and Kurt’s find their way back to each other…they were one of the sweetest couples on TV before the show decided to split them up. Darren Criss is just so uber talented!!!

So tell me, what is your favorite Christmas song from a TV episode or Movie? (By the way…my all time favorite Christmas movie is White Christmas)

And now, here are Blaine and Kurt (before they got together) singing…”Baby It’s Cold Outside”!

Happily Ever After?

One of my all time favorite tv couples has always been Brian and Justin on “Queer As Folk”. I remember checking the show out on a whim, then deliberately. In fact, when my boyfriend was ready to cancel premium channels back then, I told him that it was ok as long as we kept Showtime. I didn’t care about anything else. In fact, I didn’t even care about anything else on Showtime!

What made them so compelling? Well, besides the obvious hottie appeal, Brian Kinney was the quintessential bad boy. Apparently Justin Taylor and I had similar tastes in men. Brian was the successful, much older, wilder man. Justin was the younger, wiser boy. He saw through Brian’s facade to the sensitive, damaged person that even most of his friends didn’t know existed.

And Brian? He couldn’t resist Justin’s sweetness, his wisdom, his stubbornness, not to mention his unwillingness to give up on him. And over the years Brian gave Justin reasons. Deep down, I don’t think he felt good enough or deserving enough of Justin’s pure love. But Brian loved him, unselfishly and without reservation. His love for Justin was the purest, best part of Brian’s heart…and you saw it reflected in his eyes every time he looked at him.

And then there were the sex scenes! These guys burned up my tv screen when they’d burn up the sheets. Who could forget the scene when Brian caught up with Justin in New York after they’d fought and Justin had run away, taking Brian’s credit cards with him.

But there were also the sweet ones. I still find their dance at Justin’s prom to be one of the sweetest, most romantic scenes to grace a tv screen. To end Season 1 in that kind of violence after such sweetness? It blew my mind…and brought home the sad reality of gay bashing. Prior to that point, I don’t think I would’ve fully understood. Let’s face it! I’m a straight woman…and up till a couple years after that, I didn’t even know I had any gay friends.

Sitting at home last night, putting down a scene on paper that had been tugging at my brain had brought the song “Save The Last Dance For Me” to my head. Of course, since that was the song they’d danced to at prom, I remembered my favorite “Super Couple”. (Music does that to me) I started YouTubing Brian and Justin…and found this clip. It definitely showed their ups and downs, but it really showcased the love.

Now “Queer As Folk” has been off the air for years, but I know I’m not the only one who feels this way about these guys. In the last episode, we saw Justin headed to New York to chase his dream as an artist as Brian stayed behind. Their wedding was cancelled. But when I think back to these guys, I have a hard time thinking that was the end of their story together.

In my mind, I see them finding their way back to each other and living happily ever after. I feel like there are just some couples who are meant to stand the test of time, regardless of how their tv shows end. Do YOU have a couple who does that for you? Who captured your heart and your imagination? Who still makes you wonder where they are now?

Who knows? Maybe one day I’ll be tempted to write my image of how their story really ended.

Of course, fan fic being what it is, there’s a good chance someone already has! (Not that it will stop me)
