Were Those Words Worth It?

I’m feeling a bit melancholy today. This election has been tearing at me. I choose not to post about political things. Not on Facebook. Not on Twitter. In fact, I rarely talk about it. People sometimes take my silence to mean I don’t have an opinion. That’s absolutely not true. If you’ve followed my blog, you know I have opinions on many things. This is just one of them that I don’t discuss.

Before you go reading anything more into this I need to explain why this election has been tearing at me. Let me clarify…someone once said…hang in there. Whether the person(s) in office is someone you like and respect or not, sooner or later someone else will come along. It’s just a matter of waiting. It’s all cyclical.

But it’s not the politicians that are bothering me. It’s the behavior I’m seeing from people…on both sides…that has been disturbing me. It seems like in the last twelve years people have gotten steadily nastier with their comments, their slogans…and even the memes they choose to use. They have done everything from question people’s intelligence if they chose to vote their way to mocking people as unaware and uneducated and the list goes on and on. (I even know of someone who told a friend of mine who is gay and voted republican that they hoped he got aids and died….really? Another friend voiced her opinion on where she was going to cast her vote and received threats of bodily harm…from a friend of a friend…and they had descriptions of her children, prompting her to call the police and report it. She is a single mom. Her kids safety comes first.)

I have friends who are blocking other friends posts in an effort to be able to simply retain friendships after the election is over. Families have stopped speaking to each other because they’re on opposite sides of a political fence and the comments made were hurtful enough to cause some of the more mature members to back away and stop talkin in the hopes that maybe these fences can be mended once the election is over. It seems in the last twelve years this kind of nastiness during election years has gotten steadily worse…driving stakes into friendships, families…and ultimately into this country I love so much. The taunting and gloating and mud slinging that’s still going on post election…isn’t helping. The end of the election isn’t the end of the world…but it very well may be the end of some relationships, because even now, it hasn’t stopped.

Does any of this behavior change anyone’s minds? Rarely. Unless you’re someone who was undecided and became repeatedly victimized by the bashing that’s happened because of some questions you may have had. The negative behavior might have sealed your vote for the opposition of the basher. One of my friends had a meme that said, “I don’t post my comments to change your mind. I post them to speak mine.” Ok. So regardless of whether you voted for either candidate…when you say that if you vote a certain way, you must be stupid…that’s your opinion of your friends? Got it. Good to know.

The thing is…these words…these sayings…these things….they can’t be taken back! Once they’re out of your mouth (or in many cases blasted all over facebook and twitter to assault every person on your friends list), the damage is done. We talk about bullying and how terrible it is. We all agree that it’s a huge epidemic in this country. Where do you think our children learn that behavior from? All this nastiness and insults? Guess what, people! That’s bullying, too.

I had no issue with any post on either side that chose to discuss or debate the election based on salient points pertaining to the actual election. The rest was garbage…and sad. We spout off about family values… From what I’ve seen, it’s important as long as everyone agrees. Whatever happened to agreeing to disagree? Or rational discussion? Yeah…our country is being torn apart from the inside…and we have no one but ourselves and our superiority complexes to blame.

This is not a Democrat or Republican issue. It’s a people issue. People should always come first. Respect. Love. Value. When a cause becomes more important than people…it’s time to think long and hard. I hope we can get past these rifts we’ve managed to create for ourselves.

And for you folks that aren’t in the US…I hope, if you live in a country where you have not only the honor, but the obligation to vote that you remember to love and respect those around you…regardless of who you are voting for. I value my freedoms. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I just wish people valued their friends and family with the same fervor they give their politicians.

So here’s my melancholy music for today….

Oh my gosh Kitt, I could not agree more with this post. I too have an opinion on this election, but I chose not to share it for everything you’ve listed above. People can’t just agree to disagree. They want to hide behind social media and let their words be their face when, in fact, most people wouldn’t say half the stuff they say now directly to anyone’s face.
Its very sad. Opinions are great, but what’s done is done. Your vote was your voice. Stop the negativity and lets move forward people!
    Great post Kitt!

Thanks, Loni! I’ve actually taken a hiatus from my private FB page because of all the comments flying back and forth. I figured the bonus is that I can focus on my writing…. finish editing my WIP before sending it off. All the ‘not nice’ stuff I’m seeing both ways has me at the end of my tether.

Very good post. I rarely participate in “political” discussions or agendas because most have become a form of bullying. They just use the political slant to justify their nasty behavior and cruelty. I don’t care which side they are on. I’ve seen it from both sides and I find it utterly repulsive.

With more access comes responsibility. We have a choice in how we use the things we can access. It’s a shame that people choose to use these things to hurt and bully. The sad thing is, apparently many of the people who choose to communicate this way don’t care who they hurt.

Thanks. So do I. As for not knowing anyone who votes… I’ll show my ignorance now and ask… is it because it’s not an option or because people don’t care or simply because people don’t talk about it? I’d love it if you’d educate me on the processes there. 🙂

I only catch snippets of what goes on in politics
sometimes I am affected by the strikes… otherwise only my salary is effected 🙂

Personally, I don’t care much for it.
I think that is how most people around me think, too.
I am not sure, but it could be that we realize the choices are not very different… 😦 sigh…

There is a section of die-hard patriots… I don’t know their motives, but they exist.

I guess, growing up in a military household and realizing that the role of President includes being the Head of the armed forces, then learning about George Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Edison and the like and how hard they fought for our freedoms…to give us a voice that allowed us to be heard…the being required to study, understand and pass a Constitution test to even graduate 8th grade…you usually become someone who wants to have their voice heard & you know that you have the ability to create change. You start to understand that every vote matters. Even in middle school on forward, there’s always some sort of election…(student council). Sadly, we often take our rights to speak out and to be activists for granted, forgetting that there are parts of the world who have no idea that our freedoms can actually happen because they live in worlds where the mere idea of speaking out against leadership could get them killed.

Anyway…there I go, jumping on my soap box, LOL! As you can tell, I feel very passionately about our ability to vote, free speech and so many other parts that make the US the land I love.

🙂 You may just be a more caring person…

I’ve never been a supporter of systems… he, he 🙂
Even for the church, I am borderline committed…
            Too many do’s and don’t’s and if’s and not’s…
And it actually means a lot to me, the faith…
so you can guess how much man-made politics means to me…

If people had common sense we wouldn’t need all this artificial order.

Ha ha! Yeah… As for the do’s and don’t’s of the church…I find many of that is man made. I’ll leave my judgement up to God. He only has two really hard and fast rules. Love The Lord your God and Love each other. (Even the 10 Commandments break down that way)

Isn’t it funny how we struggle so hard with even those two? 🙂

I think part of it is a) that every election cycle that goes by more is at stake and b) the anonymising effect of social media and so-called “citizen journalism” whereby no one is actually accountable for anything they say anymore.

That’s a great point. The funny thing is the more often than not, the “anonymizing effect” is not very anonymous at all! But you’re absolutely right… It’s far easier to spew nastiness online than it is face to face. It’s a shame because the effect is actually far more alienating over the Internet where many people are impacted by that behavior than had the person simply stated it to people face to face. In face, at least face to face you may have an opportunity to clarify the position you’ve taken and be found less insulting and/or condescending. Of course that’s just my opinion. (Gosh, I hope I’m making sense)

I totally agree with you. I think it’s a shame that the place for engaging other people’s opinions with respect and logic is a thing of the past. I heard some of the craziest political talk at work of all places! I’m all about people making their opinion heard, but I also think there’s a time and place for everything, and frankly it doesn’t belong at work. It belongs in the polls, on your blog if you so choose, or discussed among family and friends.

Oh, I know. In fact, in past elections I’ve had to tell employees (worked for a big corporation) that wearing a “just vote” button or an “I voted” sticker was ok, but wearing one backing a specific candidate…ANY specific candidate…was not. While we are representing our company people tent to assume that what we think is representative of what our company thinks, so words needed to be chosen carefully and qualified with things like “in my personal opinion”.

I am of the same mindset when it comes to politics. I try very hard not to post anything about it or who I would vote for. Every now and then if someone says something and they are misinformed and what they are saying is just totally untrue and it pisses me off I will correct them but otherwise I try to stay away from it.
